Learn the beautiful art of patchwork to make your own unique tote bag.

In this one-day workshop, Clemency will guide you through the essentials of patchwork but with a modern twist. You will learn numerous techniques, tricks and tips to create contemporary patterns and compositions.

This workshop is for those looking to have fun with their sewing skills and is an opportunity to play with fabric, colour, shape and texture to create a striking tote bag design. During the day we will be exploring and merging traditional and global techniques to make a series of individual blocks in fabrics and colours of your choice. From there, Clemency will guide you through the step-by-step process to form these panels into a quick and easy lined tote bag at your preferred size with woven straps.

MEET YOUR TUTOR

Clemency Calkin works between Stroud and her studio in Bristol. She is an artist working predominantly with textiles, creating patchwork paintings that combine traditional sewing techniques with bright colour palettes. Her works are a celebration of the many possibilities of cloth, elevating what has often been seen as a ‘domestic craft’ into fine art.

Through her creative process of translating feelings into colours and uncertainties into patterns, Clemency is able to process her experience of a complex world. She hopes to create tactile art that brings joy - to the viewer as well as the space it sits in.
