An introduction to throwing on the potter's wheel, for beginners

Miranda will guide you through the process of throwing a pot on the wheel, step-by-step. You will learn to centre the clay and then create your own unique hand-thrown bowls and cylinders.

You will focus on hand movements , clay preparation and each stage of shaping will be explored to give a full understanding of how to get from a lump of clay to finished functional pot.

You will learn and decide which specific shapes you would like to focus on , all whilst gaining further understanding of the motions and stages needed to get to a finished pot. You will have the whole day to practice techniques for different forms. You will be confident at throwing your own pieces by the end of the day.

Meet your tutor

Miranda makes high-fired stoneware forms using a combination of wheel-thrown and hand-built techniques. Her work has a focus on form and explores the idea of balance and texture, often highlighted by contrasting glazes.

Miranda has an interest in clay as a natural material and different clay bodies. She is interested in our relationship with clay and its journey. Miranda hopes to emulate the organic process in her art making, showing where the clay has come from and the process of turning clay into ceramic.

Miranda believes in the therapeutic benefits of working with clay and teaches throwing and hand-building classes at New Brewery Arts and from her Bristol based studio.
