In this workshop you will slab build a candlestick holder, adding pattern and colour to the surface using slips and sgraffito.

In the first part of the workshop you will be shown the fundamental techniques required to slab build; leading you through the use of templates to create slab built pieces, rolling, sticking, and smoothing clay, focusing on creating the right sized holder for the candlestick, as well as having time to create personalised features such as handles.

In the second part of the workshop Pascale will explain the use of slips and how they differ from glazes, and introduce sgraffito. You will be taught to use coloured slips and sgraffito technique to decorate your piece. Sgraffito allows for the creation of pattern with bold colour.

You will be given a candlestick to fit your holder as well. You will leave this workshop with good introductory knowledge of ceramics, and be inspired to do more beyond the workshop!

Really enjoyed the day. Pascale - the teacher - was great. Very helpful and explained everything to a very novice potter! Joyful day..

MEET YOUR TUTOR

Pascale is a Bristol based ceramicist who loves to create character-rich artworks. She combines simple forms with faces, patterns and bold colours to spark narratives. Handbuilding is a slow and freeform production method, allowing her to organically discover characters while making. Her work is reminiscent of Pre-Columbian art, using repeated patterns, animal and human forms, and an intrinsic playfulness, inspiring a sense of myth and curiosity. Her interest in psychological states, dreams, and our collective mental landscape underpins her work, driving her to seek understanding through making.
